Every Adventure Requires A First Step
Welcome to this crazy adventure I call life. As the Cheshire Cat says “Every adventure requires a first step. My adventure for this summer has just begun but it’s already been crazy. I was hired as a summer staffer for a local summer camp.
This camp just so happens to have been my favorite place on earth for quite a few years now. My summer adventure started with a first step, a step of faith.
When I originally applied for the job my boyfriend at the time had also applied. Actually, he gave me the idea to apply. So when I accepted the job I had thought he would be coming with me. Well, he didn’t get offered the job. But I had still already accepted. So that left me with a choice, to continue and stick to my word about wanting the job or to change my mind and flake before I had to leave for an entire summer?
I decided to come anyway. I was scared to come. I only knew like four people who were working here this summer none of which very well. One I’d known for years but wasn’t close to. Another I’d met when we were around the age of twelve, another was in a dance class with me for a very short amount of time and the last I have done a three-day overnight weekend camp with but that was it. The rest of the people were pretty much complete strangers. Oh, I forgot to mention the longest I’ve ever been away from my parents is two weeks. So not only would I have to leave my family I’d be going into a place where I have no idea what to expect.
Even while packing I was trying to decide if I really wanted to come. But I knew if didn’t not only would it make me look bad, but I would regret it.
My outlook on life is if you don’t take the first step you’ll never get where you want to go. In order to make life an adventure you have to be willing to take the first step. Adventures don’t normally just come waking up to you like in the Hobbit. If you want an adventure you’re going to have to go find it yourself. So that’s what I did.
Now I’m here and I love it! Just think if I hadn’t taken that first step I would still be sitting in my room probably wasting time on social media.
Instead, I’m learning valuable life skills that are helping me grow as a person like how important hard work is, or being efficient while still getting the job done right and well. Plus working with this team of people who all have the same goal as me for this summer is great. You don’t have to drop everything and work at a summer camp to take a first step toward an adventure this was just my small step. Everyone has a first step they can take toward a goal they have for their life. So the real question is what’s your first step?
