Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey

I made it a goal to post everyday when I first started this blog. Every once in a while I’ll forget to post because of long crazy days like while I was working at camp. But the last time I missed a day was different. Let me explain. If you have been paying attention to the news at all you probably heard how Texas got hit hard by hurricane Harvey. I happen end up in the middle of said storm. To be clear, I’m alright, no harm befell me or anyone member of our household. But it was a storm that isn’t going to be forgotten anytime soon. It started as a tropical storm, as it moved closer to land it grew into a Cat 3 hurricane. All the weather updates said that’s as big as it was going to get. My family decided it would stay in town and just wait the storm out. The mayor of our town issued a voluntary evacuation for most of the city although for parts it was mandatory. The difference between the two is if the evacuation is mandatory the rescue people won’t come and save you if you end up in trouble, basically you stay at your own risk. We stayed, Friday the storm was supposed to hit land. That morning we cleaned out on the front porch storing and putting away anything that might blow away if left to the wind. Then we waited, around two in the afternoon it kind of started to sprinkle and rain a little bit. But that was it. It was a long day of waiting, every store in town was closed, a lot of people left town. As it turned to night the storm finally started to hit. Lots of people lost power earlier in the afternoon when the winds picked up with the rain. It started to get rather scary outside. The trees were shaking violently outside the windows. The wind made strange whistling noises I’ve never heard before, they were high pitch and rather creepy. At ten pm we lost power and all grabbed flashlights. I read until it was about twelve pm then I crawled into bed. I looked out my window before going to sleep. The street outside was covered by rain, there trees were dancing crazily in the wind and a part of our fence had fallen down. The effect of a cat 4 hurricane. The weather men were wrong, it grew bigger than they expected it to. The next morning when I woke up the hurricane had past. It was still raining but the danger was gone. We still didn’t have power but nothing bad had happened beyond that. We were lucky. Other people have not been as lucky though. Manny towns and homes have flooded, leaving their residents with only a few belongings. It’s heart breaking to see so many people in need of help. The scary thing is it’s not over yet. Harvey is still on the move. There are ways you can help the people who have been it the hardest. One easy way to help is to send money to the Red Cross origination they have been doing a ton for the people who are in need here in texas. Every little thing can help. Today we took some clothes to a friends house for police officers who have lost everything, yet they are protecting our city all the same working eight hour shifts at a time. Not having a place to go home to, because they lost their homes too, just like a lot of people. At the very least I am asking you to pray for everyone effected by the storm. The first responders included. Many people who are help others are being just as greatly impacted. We haven’t seen the end of it yet. I get the feeling there will be a lot of ways God’s love will be shown as people rebuild their lives after everything that has happened. Please pray, it’s the simplest thing you can do.
