Just Try Something New
Ever since I got back from camp this summer, I wanted to try a new dance style. I used to do hip hop when I was younger and I loved it. I was also on a dance team for a few years, that was even more fun. I want to make sure, since I left camp in such great shape, that I keep up what I muscle I gained. So today, I did something I’ve always wanted to do but never got the chance. I went to a belly dancing class. This was the first time I have ever been to one of those classes. It was pretty fun. Belly dance is a middle eastern style of dancing, one common misconception about it is that it’s for the entertainment of the opposite gender, meaning guys. Although it is easy to see why that mistake is so often made, that is not actually the case. Belly dancing is something women would do for themselves when there were no men around, like in the haram. I like to think of it as the same when you have a friend over, it’s just the two of you and you turn on music and have a dance party. Jumping around singing at the top of your lungs and no body but the two watching. It’s just the old fashioned version of a dance party from a different culture. I really like the idea of belly dancing, plus that added bonus is it’s just plain fun. But here is the thing. It would have been really easy to blow it off and say I’ll just go next week. I could have said well because it will be awkward to just show up I just won’t. I had a feeling if I went, I would be the youngest person in the class, I was right. I could have easily let that stop me. But I didn’t. I showed up. I had fun and even though I wasn’t the best, I didn’t have to be. For the first time ever taking a belly dance class that wasn’t a YouTube video playing on my phone, I wasn’t terrible. Sometimes you just have to try something new! You might find you love that new thing and if you don’t step out of your comfort zone you’ll never know. So go try that new thing you’ve always wanted to try, you might be pleasantly surprised.
