How To Deal With Panic Attacks

Up until 2016, I had never had a panic attack before in my life. During that year there were 3 house fires in my neighborhood. I don’t like fire much, to begin with. I never have and I probably never will. It scares me and I hate getting burned. Well, one night two days before I have going to attend student camp at Camp Zephyr (the same camp I now work at in the summer).
I had my first panic attack. I thought I heard fire noises and got so worked up I stayed up until 3 or 4 in the morning in a state of pure terror. If you’ve never had a panic or anxiety attack consider yourself lucky. In the past, I have looked into the reason behind why we humans get panic attacks. It happens when your mind suddenly decides to go into fight or flight mode without a solid reason.
Your brain then tries to figure out why your body is in full on freak out mode and then can’t come up with a logical reason. So you are left in a state of panic or anxiety. Without an explanation of why you feel in danger, your brain can’t give your body the ok to chill.
I believe that these are attacks in the spiritual world as well. I see these as the devil attacking your mind making it hard to think. This first panic attack happened right before I was going to camp. The place where I have had some of the biggest growth in my walk with God. That year was a big year for me at camp too. I was reminded of my dreams that God had promised me I’d have one day while I was back in middle school.
So how do I deal with panic attacks? You have to distract yourself. Distract your mind from racing. The way I deal with panic attacks is I turn on worship music and I focus all my attention on worshiping God. Until I can think enough to start praying. I say out loud; “Jesus Protect me.” or “In Jesus Christ the son of God be gone.” Even if it just comes out as a whisper it still helps me feel that much better. Then I continue with my prayer and just talk to God.
So the answer to panic attacks is to distract yourself preferably with worshiping God. You’d be surprised at how much it clears your thoughts!
The first time I did this I was able to calm down enough to fall asleep after a bit.
I hope this helped you! I know dealing with anxiety and a panic attacks is hard. Just because my solution sounds simple doesn’t mean it’s always easy to implement. But it has worked for me every time.

One last thing I also remember this verse when I am feeling under attack.
Joshua 1: 9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
